ESCMID Global 2027 Grants: Three Deadlines on One Day, and Which One Is Yours

ESCMID Global 2027 Grants:

Three grants. One deadline date. Three different times on the clock, and the first one closes at midday while most people are still deciding which grant to apply for.

The three clocks of 18 November 2026

Write these down before you read anything else.

12:00 CET — the Travel Grant membership cutoff. Your Young Scientist Member status must already exist by midday. Not your application, your membership. Join after midday and the Travel Grant is gone, even though applications stay open for five more hours.

17:00 CET — Travel Grant and Outreach Grant applications close.

23:59 CET — LMIC Grant applications close.

And abstract submission for ESCMID Global 2027 closes on the same day. The submission window opened on 7 October 2026 and runs to 18 November 2026.

So on one afternoon, an Outreach or Travel applicant may be finishing an abstract, an application and a membership at once. Separate those tasks by weeks, not hours.

Which grant is actually yours

The three grants look similar and are not. Work down this list and stop at the first one that fits.

The LMIC Grant — the widest door. For anyone living and working in a low- or middle-income country. No abstract required. No age limit, no career-stage limit. It pays free onsite registration plus up to €1,300 for travel and accommodation.

You submit proof of LMIC residence and two short texts of no more than 100 words each: the main professional benefit you hope to gain from ESCMID Global 2027, and how you will apply or share what you learn after returning home. ESCMID runs an eligibility check, then evaluates.

Two hundred words. That is the entire written application. For a fully funded congress trip, there is nothing else in this series that asks so little.

The Outreach Grant — for those who submitted something. Same money as the LMIC Grant: free onsite registration plus €1,300. It requires that you submitted an abstract or a case study during the regular abstract call, and it needs ESCMID LMIC membership.

Here is the part most people miss. Acceptance is not required. You need to have submitted, not to have been accepted. A case study counts. That is a far lower bar than almost any congress grant written about on this site.

The Travel Grant — for accepted abstracts. Free onsite registration plus €500. You apply during abstract submission, and ESCMID awards it to the presenting authors of the highest-rated accepted abstracts who requested it. It requires valid Young Scientist Member status acquired before 18 November 2026 at 12:00 CET, and LMIC members who meet the YSM criteria also qualify.

ESCMID offers over 100 of these, which is unusually generous, but the award follows abstract quality. The abstract is the application.

The detail that protects you if plans change

All three grants share a clause worth knowing before you apply.

An awardee who cannot attend onsite still receives the free registration.

For a Pakistani applicant that matters more than it does for a European one. If a Schengen visa for Sweden does not come through in time, the registration is not simply lost. Read the award terms when they arrive, confirm what remains available to you, and ask ESCMID directly rather than assuming.

Start the visa question the day you apply, not the day you are notified. Notifications land in December and the congress runs 9 to 13 April 2027 in Stockholm. That is roughly four months, which is workable but not generous.

What to do in the next four weeks

If you want the LMIC Grant, which is most readers, you need three things: ESCMID LMIC membership, proof of residence, and two hundred words. None of that takes a month. It takes an evening, and the only reason people miss it is that they wait.

If you want the Outreach Grant, you must submit an abstract or case study before the abstract call closes on 18 November. A case study from your own ward counts. If you have a notable isolate, an unusual resistance pattern or an outbreak you managed, you have a submission.

If you want the Travel Grant, secure Young Scientist Member status well before midday on 18 November, and apply during abstract submission rather than afterwards.

You can only hold one, so choose the one that fits rather than spreading effort across all three.

Writing the two hundred words

Since the LMIC Grant turns on two 100-word answers, treat them as the whole application.

The first asks what professional benefit you hope to gain. Name something specific to ESCMID Global 2027 — a session topic, a technique, a network in your subspecialty — rather than general enthusiasm.

The second asks how you will apply or share what you learn at home. This is the one that separates applications. Name the hospital, the laboratory, the teaching session you will run, the protocol you intend to revise. Four of the five criteria we found across other congress bursaries were about other people, not the applicant, and the pattern in our World Physiotherapy congress bursaries post is the same here.

Our free CV builder handles the supporting document work, and our guide on writing a research proposal covers framing a case study submission that a committee will take seriously.
