Calgary International Entrance Scholarships

Nearly every page you will find about this scholarship contains the same mistake, and it costs students the award every single year. This is especially important for those applying for Calgary International Entrance Scholarships, as avoiding these errors can make all the difference.
They tell you that applying for admission to the University of Calgary puts you in automatic consideration for the international entrance scholarship. It does not. UCalgary runs a separate award application inside the My UCalgary Portal, under a heading most applicants never open, and it closes on 1 December six weeks before many students have even finished their admission file.
The second mistake follows from the first. There is no single “Calgary International Entrance Scholarship”. There is a family of awards, several worth CAD 20,000 each, with different numbers of recipients and eligibility rules that rule most international students out entirely. This guide separates them, because choosing the wrong one wastes the only application you get.
What the main award pays
The University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship is worth CAD 20,000, and it renews.
Renewal runs through your second, third and fourth years, on two conditions: you achieve a GPA of 2.60 or higher over at least 24 units across the previous fall and winter terms, and you continue to pay international differential tuition. A student who holds it for all four years receives CAD 80,000.
Two points of honesty about that figure, because this is where most sites stop.
Only two of these scholarships exist. UCalgary offers two per year, across every faculty, to every international applicant worldwide. The odds resemble a national competition rather than a university entrance award.
It does not cover your tuition. International undergraduate tuition at Calgary runs near CAD 30,782 a year in most faculties, CAD 36,104 in the Haskayne School of Business and CAD 41,487 in the Schulich School of Engineering, based on the rates effective from Spring 2026. A CAD 20,000 award against CAD 30,000 of tuition leaves a real gap, before you have paid rent or bought a winter coat. Plan for that gap rather than discovering it in August.
The full family of awards

Here is what actually exists, and who each award is really for.
University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship CAD 20,000, renewable, 2 awards. Open to any international student entering first year in any undergraduate degree, selected on academic merit. This is the one most students mean, and the one worth applying for from anywhere in the world.
University of Calgary International Entrance Award CAD 20,000, number varies. Also open to first-year international students in any degree, on academic merit, but it runs through the High School Nominated Awards route rather than the Prestige route. Your school puts your name forward. If no entering students qualify in a given year, UCalgary may offer it to continuing international students instead.
University of Calgary International Undergraduate Award CAD 5,000, 20 awards. This one is for continuing students in second, third and fourth year, not for applicants. Students in the International Foundations Program are excluded. Worth remembering for your second year, and worth ignoring now.
Energizing Canada International Entrance Scholarship CAD 20,000, renewable, 1 award. Restricted to students who graduated from a high school in China, including Hong Kong and Macau, assessed on both academic merit and financial need, with preference for Engineering, Commerce, Health Sciences and Urban Studies. If you studied in China, this award has a far smaller applicant pool than the main scholarship.
CBE, CCSD, Golden Hills and IPSEA International Entrance Scholarships CAD 20,000 each. Every one of these requires that you graduated from a high school inside a specific Calgary-area school district: the Calgary Board of Education, the Calgary Catholic School District, Golden Hills, or an IPSEA member district. They exist for international students who already live and study in Calgary. If you are applying from outside Canada, you cannot win any of them
However many listing sites tell you otherwise.
That last group is why the internet’s figures look so generous. Add four or five awards of CAD 20,000 together and Calgary appears to be handing out a fortune to international students. Separate out the ones restricted to local high schools, and what remains for an applicant in Karachi, Kano or Kathmandu is two renewable scholarships and one nominated award.
Who can apply
You pay international tuition and you hold neither Canadian citizenship nor permanent residence. UCalgary states this plainly, and it governs every award on this page. A student who becomes a permanent resident during their degree stops meeting the renewal condition, since renewal requires that you continue paying the international differential fee.
You are entering first year of an undergraduate degree. The entrance awards cover first-year entry in any faculty. Students already enrolled apply instead to the International Undergraduate Award, worth CAD 5,000.
You meet UCalgary’s English Language Proficiency requirement. Satisfy this before the award deadline rather than alongside it. If your degree was taught in English and a medium of instruction letter applies to your case, our free MOI generator produces the request letter your registrar needs.
Selection runs on academic merit. For the main scholarship there is no financial need component and no essay-driven life story. Your grades carry the decision. The Energizing Canada award is the exception, assessing need alongside merit.
How to apply, step by step
Step one, apply for admission first. You need a UCalgary application before the award application means anything. Start in September or early October so your student ID and portal access exist in good time.
Step two, log into the My UCalgary Portal. This is the part students miss. The award application lives inside the portal, not inside your admission form, and submitting one does not submit the other.
Step three, open the right application. Two separate routes exist, and they lead to different awards:
- High School Prestige Awards: this covers the main International Entrance Scholarship, along with the CBE, CCSD and IPSEA awards.
- High School Nominated Awards, New Students: this covers the International Entrance Award and the Energizing Canada scholarship, and it involves your school.
Read both. Apply through whichever fits your situation, and through both if you qualify for both.
Step four, submit by 1 December. The High School Prestige Awards application closes on 1 December. Treat that as absolute. Verify the exact date and time for your admission year on the portal, because UCalgary publishes deadlines per cycle and a date that shifted by a day has ended applications before.
Step five, keep your grades up through final year. Merit decides this award. A predicted grade that slips in your last term costs more here than in an application assessed on essays and leadership.
What strong applicants do differently
Because selection runs on academic merit, the usual scholarship advice about compelling personal narratives matters less here than it does for need-based awards like the UBC International Leader of Tomorrow Award. Three things genuinely move the needle.
They apply early enough to fix problems. A missing transcript or an English proficiency result that arrives late disqualifies a strong file quietly. Students who start in September find these problems in October, while they remain fixable.
They present their grades in a form the committee can read. A Pakistani HSSC percentage, a Nigerian WAEC grade and an Indian CBSE score all mean something different, and nobody on an awards committee converts them for you. Give clear documentation of your grading scale and your position in your cohort if your school provides it.
They apply to both routes when eligible. A student whose school will nominate them loses nothing by also submitting the Prestige application. Each route feeds different awards.
How this compares to other Canadian options
Calgary’s award suits a particular student: strong grades, enough family support to cover the gap between CAD 20,000 and the real cost, and no need for a nomination-heavy application.
If your situation involves significant financial need, the UBC International Leader of Tomorrow Award covers tuition and living costs rather than a fixed sum, though it requires a school nomination and closes on 15 November. The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship at the University of Toronto covers everything for four years, also by nomination.
For graduate study, Calgary’s entrance awards do not apply. Our guides to the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarships and the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships cover that ground, including which programmes have closed since the listing sites last checked.
The mistakes that end applications

Believing the award is automatic. It is not. No portal application means no award, whatever your grades.
Missing 1 December. The award deadline sits well before many admission deadlines. Students working to the admission calendar arrive six weeks late.
Applying for an award restricted to Calgary high schools. CBE, CCSD, Golden Hills and IPSEA all require graduation from a specific local district. Check this before you spend a day on it.
Confusing the entrance awards with the Undergraduate Award. The CAD 5,000 International Undergraduate Award goes to continuing students, not to applicants.
Assuming CAD 20,000 covers the bill. It covers roughly two-thirds of tuition in most faculties and under half in Engineering. Build a plan for the rest before you accept an offer.
Letting final-year grades slip. Merit decides this award, and the committee sees your most recent results.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Calgary international entrance scholarship automatic?
No. You apply separately inside the My UCalgary Portal, through the High School Prestige Awards or High School Nominated Awards application, and the Prestige application closes on 1 December.
How much is it worth?
The main International Entrance Scholarship pays CAD 20,000 and renews for years two, three and four, reaching CAD 80,000 over a four-year degree.
What GPA do I need to keep it?
A GPA of 2.60 or higher over at least 24 units across the previous fall and winter terms, and you must continue to pay international differential tuition.
How many students win it?
Two per year for the main scholarship. Other awards in the family offer between one and three each, and some have a variable number.
Does it cover full tuition?
No. International tuition runs near CAD 30,782 a year in most faculties, CAD 36,104 at Haskayne and CAD 41,487 at Schulich Engineering. The award covers a substantial share, not the whole bill.
I am already in Canada on a study permit. Can I apply?
Yes, provided you pay international tuition and hold neither citizenship nor permanent residence. If you graduated from a Calgary-area high school, the CBE, CCSD, Golden Hills and IPSEA awards also open to you, and those pools are far smaller.
Can master’s or PhD applicants apply?
No. These are undergraduate entrance awards. Graduate funding at Calgary runs through a separate system and through departmental assistantships.
Do I need to write an essay?
The main scholarship selects on academic merit. The portal application asks for your record and supporting information rather than a personal statement, though strong supporting detail helps. Our free tools can help you structure anything you do write, and they cost nothing.
What if my school has never nominated anyone?
The High School Prestige Awards route needs no nomination, so apply there regardless. Separately, ask your school about the nominated route, many schools outside Canada have simply never been asked.
