Schwarzman Scholars: A Fully Funded Year at Tsinghua

Schwarzman Scholars covers everything. Tuition, fees, room and board, your flights to Beijing at the start and home at the end, in-country study tours, course books, a laptop, health insurance, and a personal stipend on top.
Up to 200 people win it each year, from anywhere in the world.
And the applications closed weeks ago.
Read that without disappointment, because this timing works in your favor. Most people discover Schwarzman three days before a deadline and send something rushed into the most competitive master’s competition in the world. You now have six months before the next window even opens.
The timeline that surprises everybody
Here is the detail that reframes the whole programme.
For the class of 2028-2029, the global application window runs April to September 2027. Interviews follow in late October and early November 2027. The programme itself begins in August 2028.
So you apply nearly a year before you are selected, and almost a year and a half before you move to Beijing.
Applicants from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan run on a separate, earlier schedule: March to May 2027, with selection in June and July.
If you are reading this in Pakistan, India, Nigeria or Bangladesh, your window is the April to September one, and you have until spring to build the application rather than write it.
What you actually get

A one-year master’s degree in global affairs from Tsinghua University in Beijing, taught entirely in English, with a concentration in public policy, economics and business, or international studies.
The year runs from a compulsory orientation in late August to graduation in early July.
The funding covers tuition and fees, room and board, return travel to Beijing, study tours inside China, required books and supplies, a laptop, health insurance, and a stipend. Your family pays nothing towards it.
Chinese is not required. All teaching happens in English.
The eligibility, including the line that ends most applications
An undergraduate degree. Any subject. If you are still studying, you must finish every requirement before 1 August of your enrolment year.
Age: at least 18 and under 29 on 1 August of the enrolment year. For the 2028-2029 class, that means under 29 on 1 August 2028.
Read that twice. This is a hard cut-off, and it eliminates more strong candidates than the essays do. Work out your own age on that date today, before you invest a single evening in this.
English. If English is not your first language, you need a test score, unless you have studied in English for at least two years at undergraduate or master’s level. The accepted minimums:
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL | 100 of 120 |
| IELTS | 7 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency | 185 |
| Duolingo English Test | 130 |
An IELTS 7 takes most Pakistani applicants two or three months of real preparation. That is another argument for starting now rather than in August.
What the application asks for
The list is short, which is precisely what makes it hard.
- A CV of no more than 2 pages
- A Leadership Essay of 750 words
- A Statement of Purpose of 500 words
- Official transcripts from every degree-granting institution
- Three letters of recommendation
- A video self-introduction of no more than 1 minute
Then a committee of business, government and academic leaders reviews everything, and shortlisted candidates face an international interview panel in late October or early November.
The programme explicitly discourages anything extra. Portfolios, a fourth recommendation, additional certificates none of it reaches the committee.
So your entire case for 200 places worldwide sits in 1,250 words, two pages, and sixty seconds. Nothing else saves a weak application, and nothing else is read.

What they are looking for, and who should not apply
Schwarzman exists to produce people who can work between China and the rest of the world. The selection favors leadership and demonstrated impact over pure academic record.
That makes it the wrong programme for some very good students, and saying so saves them a year.
Do not apply if you want a research master’s, a technical degree, or a laboratory. This is a policy and leadership programme. It does not lead to a PhD in the way a research master’s does.
Do apply if you have run something, built something, or changed something, and you can show what happened as a result. A student society you rebuilt. A clinic you organized. A business you started. A campaign that moved a number.
Grades get you considered. Evidence of leadership gets you selected.
What to do between now and April 2027
October to December 2026. Book and sit IELTS or TOEFL if you need one. Get it out of the way while nothing else competes for your attention.
January to February 2027. Draft the Leadership Essay. Not a list of positions held, one situation, what you did, what changed. Seven hundred and fifty words rewards a single story told properly far more than five stories summarized. Our SOP generator will help you structure the Statement of Purpose alongside it.
February 2027. Approach your three referees. Give each of them your CV, your draft essays, and a reminder of the specific work you did with them. A referee who writes “a hardworking student” has sunk you. Our reference letter generator shows what a usable letter contains.
March 2027. Cut your CV to two pages and record the video several times until one minute feels natural rather than rehearsed. Our CV reviewer will tell you what to remove.
April 2027. Open the application on the first day and submit early. Nothing good happens to applications filed in the final week.

If the age limit rules you out
It rules out many readers, and that is not the end of anything.
Fully funded routes to China exist without an age cut-off this tight, the Chinese Government Scholarship through CSC being the obvious one, which we cover in our CSC China guide. And if your goal is a funded research degree rather than a leadership year, a European doctorate pays you a salary with no tuition fee at all, as our ORFeus guide and DTU Denmark post set out.
Match the programme to what you actually want. Schwarzman is extraordinary, and it is not the only door.
