Uppsala University Scholarships 2027 (IPK): What They Cover and What They Don’t

Uppsala University Scholarships

Uppsala University Global Scholarship IPK 2027 — full tuition waived, living costs not covered

This scholarship pays your tuition and nothing else.

The Uppsala University Global Scholarship — still widely listed under its older name, the IPK Scholarship — waives the full tuition fee for an international Master’s programme. It does not pay your rent, your food, your insurance or your flight. Uppsala states this plainly, and most listings that call it “fully funded” do not.

That matters more in Sweden than almost anywhere else, because the Swedish Migration Agency will not issue your residence permit unless you prove you hold SEK 10,656 a month — about SEK 127,872 for a year — before you arrive. A tuition waiver does not satisfy that rule. Students win this scholarship every year and then discover they cannot get the permit.

The second thing listings rarely mention: roughly 2% of applicants receive one.

None of that makes the award worthless. A waiver here removes between SEK 99,000 and SEK 180,000 a year, which is the single largest cost of studying in Sweden. It simply means you need a funding plan for the rest before you apply, not after you win.

What the Scholarship Actually Removes

Uppsala charges tuition by programme, not by a single university rate. One semester of full-time study costs between SEK 49,500 and SEK 90,000, so a two-year Master’s ranges from roughly SEK 198,000 to SEK 360,000 in total.

A Global Scholarship removes all of it. That is a substantial award, and for a student who can cover living costs another way, it turns Sweden from impossible into affordable.

What the Uppsala IPK scholarship covers versus what the student still pays in Sweden

Read the permit rule carefully. Sweden does not accept a promise of support or a monthly transfer plan. You show a bank statement proving the money exists. Students who count on part-time work to satisfy this requirement get refused, because the Migration Agency assesses the funds you hold, not the income you expect.

What a realistic year costs in Uppsala

ExpenseMonthly
Student housingSEK 3,500–6,000
FoodSEK 2,500–3,500
Transport and phoneSEK 600–900
Books, sundries, socialSEK 1,000–1,500
TotalSEK 7,600–11,900

So the permit figure reflects reality rather than exceeding it. A careful student living in corridor accommodation lands near the bottom of that range; anyone renting privately in central Uppsala lands at the top.

Who Can Apply

Citizenship. Only students from outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. EU nationals study free in Sweden and therefore need no waiver.

Fee-paying status. You must be liable for tuition. A student already exempt cannot hold this scholarship.

Admission. You apply for admission and for the scholarship separately, and you need both. The scholarship follows admission — it never replaces it.

First priority. This rule disqualifies more applicants than any other. Sweden’s national system lets you rank up to four programmes. Uppsala considers you for a scholarship only if you ranked its programme first. Rank Lund first and Uppsala second, and your Uppsala scholarship application ends there regardless of your grades.

Academic strength. Uppsala assesses academic talent and your engagement with academic environments. With a 2% success rate, a good transcript alone rarely suffices.

The Timeline That Trips People Up

Sweden runs one national admission round for autumn entry, and every date depends on it. The scholarship window sits inside that round and closes early.

For the 2026 intake the scholarship window ran 16 January to 2 February 2026, and Uppsala refused every late application. Expect the 2027 window to sit in the same fortnight, and treat it as fixed until the university publishes the exact dates.

Start the permit application the day your scholarship result arrives. Swedish permits routinely take two to three months, and a permit that arrives in September costs you the semester.

How to Apply, Step by Step

  1. Choose your programme and check its fee. Each programme page lists its own tuition. This decides what the waiver is worth to you.
  2. Apply at university admissions.se by mid-January, ranking the Uppsala programme first.
  3. Pay the SEK 900 application fee and upload your documents by the document deadline. An unpaid application is never assessed, and the fee does not come back.
  4. Submit the scholarship application through Uppsala’s own portal inside its short window. Admission alone does not enter you.
  5. Prepare the money for the permit while you wait. Whatever the scholarship decides, the SEK 127,872 requirement does not change.
  6. Apply for the residence permit as soon as you have your admission and scholarship results.

Honest Assessment: Should You Apply?

Apply if:

Roughly SEK 128,000 a year in living costs can be funded through savings, family support, or another award. With a strong academic record, you are well suited to a programme at Uppsala that genuinely fits your direction. Ranking it first would also demonstrate that Uppsala is your real preference rather than a hedge.

Think again if

Tuition is not actually your obstacle — living costs are. In that case a fully funded award serves you better: Swedish Institute Scholarships cover tuition and SEK 12,000 a month, and Erasmus Mundus covers both across European universities. Both are more competitive, but both solve the whole problem rather than half of it.

Also reconsider if Uppsala sits second on your list. The first-priority rule makes this scholarship an all-or-nothing choice, and ranking a programme first purely to chase a waiver is a poor way to pick two years of your life.

A sensible strategy

Apply to Uppsala as your first choice and pursue the Swedish Institute award in the same cycle — its deadline falls separately, usually in February. Winning both is unnecessary; the SI award alone covers everything. Winning only Uppsala still leaves you a fundable gap rather than an impossible one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Uppsala IPK Scholarship fully funded?

No. It waives tuition in full and pays nothing toward living costs, housing, insurance or travel. Sweden separately requires proof of SEK 10,656 a month for your residence permit.

What happened to the name “IPK”?

Uppsala now calls it the Uppsala University Global Scholarship. Older listings still use IPK, and both refer to the same award.

Do I need to apply separately?

Yes. Admission goes through university admissions.se; the scholarship goes through Uppsala’s own form inside a short window. Both are compulsory.

Does ranking really matter that much?

Yes. Uppsala considers you only if its programme sits first among your four choices. This single rule removes a large share of applicants.

How many scholarships are awarded?

Uppsala does not publish a fixed number, and states that about 2% of applicants succeed.

Can I work to cover living costs?

Student permits allow work, but the Migration Agency assesses the funds you already hold, not future earnings. Expected wages will not get you the permit.

Is the SEK 900 application fee refundable?

No, and an unpaid application is not assessed at all.

What if I am an EU citizen?

You pay no tuition in Sweden, so this scholarship does not apply to you.

Does it cover a Bachelor’s degree?

This award covers Master’s programmes. Uppsala runs a separate scholarship scheme for Bachelor’s applicants, with its own rules.

When exactly does the 2027 round open?

Uppsala says the next round opens in early 2027. The 2026 window ran 16 January to 2 February, so plan for that fortnight and confirm on the university’s page in December.
