Bangladesh sends a growing number of students abroad on fully funded scholarships every year — and the number is increasing. Bangladeshi graduates are competitive for DAAD, GKS, CSC, Commonwealth, Fulbright, and Erasmus Mundus, and several of these programs allocate specific quota seats to Bangladesh.
The practical barriers are usually two things: IELTS costs and preparation time, and not knowing which programs are actually accessible for a Bangladeshi academic profile. This guide addresses both.
What Works in Favor of Bangladeshi Applicants
Most Bangladeshi universities deliver graduate programs in English — which means graduates from public and private universities qualify for MOI Certificate in place of IELTS for programs that accept it. That immediately removes the IELTS barrier for DAAD, GKS, MEXT, CSC, and several other major scholarships.
Bangladesh is a lower-middle-income country and a Commonwealth member. Both of those facts are structural advantages. Commonwealth scholarships explicitly prioritize lower-income Commonwealth nations. Australia Awards, DAAD, and Aga Khan Foundation all have Bangladesh in their eligible country lists.
Bangladeshi applicants from engineering, computer science, environmental science, public health, and agriculture backgrounds are particularly competitive for DAAD and GKS — fields where Bangladesh’s development context provides natural motivation stories that scholarship committees respond to.
Top Scholarships for Bangladeshi Students 2026
1. DAAD Scholarship — Germany
DAAD is the most consistently accessible European scholarship for Bangladeshi students. German public universities charge zero tuition. DAAD adds 850 euros per month for Master’s students and 1,200 euros for PhD students. MOI Certificate is accepted in place of IELTS for English-medium programs.
Bangladeshi applicants in engineering, environmental science, agriculture, public health, and computer science are well positioned for DAAD. The motivation letter must name a specific German professor and connect the proposed study to a specific challenge in Bangladesh — water management, climate adaptation, food security, public health — with the level of specificity that shows genuine research into what that professor’s group works on.
IELTS: MOI Certificate accepted Deadline: November 15, 2026
2. Commonwealth Scholarship — UK
Bangladesh is a Commonwealth member and a lower-income country — which puts Bangladeshi applicants in the priority group for Commonwealth Scholarships. Applications go through the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, which is the national nominating agency.
The development impact statement is the most important document. Bangladeshi Commonwealth applicants who write about specific challenges — garment industry health and safety, climate-driven displacement in coastal districts, rural electrification gaps — and connect those challenges to a specific UK degree, a specific returning role, and a specific measurable outcome write competitive applications.
IELTS: 6.5 typically required Deadline: October–November 2026 (through UGC Bangladesh)
3. GKS Scholarship — South Korea
GKS is one of the most accessible scholarships for Bangladeshi students. Minimum GPA of 2.64/4.0, no IELTS, MOI Certificate accepted, no GRE, full tuition waiver, approximately 700 USD per month stipend, one year free Korean language training.
Apply through the Korean Embassy in Dhaka for the Embassy Track. Bangladesh has a GKS quota allocation.
The study plan is the primary differentiator for Bangladeshi GKS applicants. Name the Korean university. Name the program or research group. Connect your proposed study to a specific professional or academic goal. Korean committees respond well to applicants who have done actual research on Korean universities rather than treating Korea as a generic study destination.
IELTS: MOI Certificate accepted Deadline: February–March 2027
4. Fulbright Scholarship — USA
Bangladesh’s Fulbright program is administered through the US Embassy in Dhaka. The annual application typically opens mid-year.
Bangladeshi applicants are competitive for Fulbright in public health, development studies, environmental science, economics, and technology policy. The study objective essay must connect the proposed US program to a specific challenge in Bangladesh — not a general desire to improve the country, but a specific problem, a specific degree that builds the specific competency needed to address it, and a specific plan for applying that competency after returning.
TOEFL: Preferred over IELTS for Fulbright Deadline: Typically June–September 2026 through US Embassy Dhaka
5. CSC China Scholarship
China and Bangladesh have a strong bilateral relationship and CSC scholarship seats are allocated to Bangladeshi students each year. Apply through the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.
For Bangladeshi engineering, computer science, and medical students, CSC is one of the most accessible pathways to a fully funded international degree. No IELTS for most programs, no minimum GPA threshold for most universities, free accommodation included.
IELTS: MOI Certificate accepted for English-medium programs Deadline: February–May 2027
6. Australian Awards — Bangladesh

Australia Awards has Bangladesh in its eligible country list. Bangladeshi students in sustainable development, public health, agriculture, water management, and governance fields are the strongest candidates.
The scholarship covers full tuition at an Australian university, approximately 26,000 AUD per year living allowance, return airfare, and health insurance. Two years of work experience is typically required.
IELTS: 6.5 minimum, no individual band below 6.0 Deadline: April–May 2027
7. Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship
The Aga Khan Foundation explicitly includes Bangladesh in its eligible countries and explicitly prioritizes financial need and first-generation graduates. For Bangladeshi students from families that cannot fund international education, this is one of the few programs where that financial reality is treated as an advantage rather than a neutral factor.
Structure: 50% grant, 50% no-interest loan repayable over eight years.
Deadline: March 2027 (through AKDN Bangladesh office)
8. MEXT — Japan
Japan’s MEXT scholarship funds research students at Japanese national universities with no IELTS requirement, no GRE, and a stipend of approximately 950 USD per month.
Bangladeshi students in environmental engineering, water management, disaster risk reduction, and agricultural science are particularly well positioned — Japan has strong research groups in all of these fields and the development context of Bangladesh (flooding, salinity intrusion, climate vulnerability) provides natural research motivation that Japanese supervisors in these fields find relevant.
Contact a Japanese professor before applying. Supervisor interest before submission is close to essential for competitive MEXT applications.
IELTS: Not required Deadline: April–May 2026 at Japanese Embassy Dhaka

Common Mistakes Bangladeshi Applicants Make
The most common failure in Bangladeshi scholarship applications is the same one that affects applicants from most South Asian countries: writing about Bangladesh’s development challenges in general terms without connecting those challenges to specific research, a specific degree, and a specific personal plan.
“Bangladesh is a developing country with many challenges and I want to contribute to its progress” appears in some form in a large proportion of scholarship applications from Bangladesh. It means nothing to a committee that has read 300 similar sentences.
What works is specific. The flooding in Sylhet in 2022 affected 7.2 million people. Salinity intrusion in coastal aquifers has rendered 20 million people in southwestern Bangladesh dependent on unsafe water sources. Ready-made garment factories employ 4 million workers, of whom 80% are women, and occupational health infrastructure is inadequate at scale. These are real, specific, documented problems. A scholarship application that connects a proposed degree to one of these problems — with that level of specificity — is not generic.
