Degree money and research money are not the same thing
Every list in this field mixes them, and that is why readers waste months. One funder here pays students and reserves four of its seven grants for applicants from the Islamic world. Another will not read your application without a doctorate, but has no deadline at all and no nationality rule. The third needs a US affiliation and will not read it either way.

Work out which half of this page is yours
Do you hold a completed doctorate? If yes, the research grants below are open to you, one of them without any deadline whatsoever, and you could begin tonight. If you are a BA or MA student, or about to start a master’s, skip to the Barakat grants instead, because Gerda Henkel will not consider you at any stage and no amount of strong writing changes that. One practical warning sits underneath both halves: the Barakat Trust cannot pay money into a personal bank account, so you need an institution willing to receive it, and that conversation takes weeks.
The three funders, and who each one is for
One for students, one for doctorate holders, and one that almost nobody reading this can use.
| Guide | The gate | What it pays | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gerda Henkel Foundation | A completed doctorate, finished within the last ten years. Open independent of nationality or place of work, so a researcher in Peshawar stands exactly where one in Heidelberg stands. | €2,300 a month for postdocs, €3,100 for lecturer-qualified researchers, plus allowances | No deadline. Grants under €25,000 can be applied for at any time. |
| The Barakat Trust | Islamic art, architecture, archaeology, heritage or conservation. Four of its seven grants go only to applicants from the Islamic world, which includes Pakistan. Students are welcome here. | From £2,500 to £25,000, depending on the grant | The 2027 cycle opens 1 January. On the 2026 pattern most categories closed 31 March, two earlier. |
| American Institute of Pakistan Studies | Full-time enrolment or employment at a US academic institution. AIPS states that applicants without that affiliation have no opportunities. The name misleads thousands of people every year. | US$3,000 to US$25,000 in total support, over two to nine months | Its own page shows a deadline of 1 January 2016. Its FAQ describes a live process with no dates. The two disagree. |
The AIPS row deserves one more sentence, because the name pulls enormous Pakistani traffic and the reality disappoints almost everyone who arrives. AIPS is not a scholarship you win from Pakistan. It is a scholarship you become eligible for after you reach a US PhD programme, through its Competition B for non-US citizens, funded from the institute’s own unrestricted funds which it describes as limited. There is an academic gate on top of that: you must have passed your PhD qualifying exams and not yet submitted your thesis, so students still taking coursework are out. Treat it as a target for year three of a US doctorate, not as a route out of Pakistan.
Barakat’s seven grants
The full list, because every other page covers one or two of them and calls it the Barakat scholarship.
| Code | Grant | Amount | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | Barakat International Studentship | Up to £25,000 | One student from the Islamic world accepted onto a taught master’s in a relevant subject |
| A2 | Postgraduate Student & Early Career Award | Up to £2,500, plus travel | Postgraduate students, and early-career scholars whose doctorate came after 30 June 2021 |
| A3 | Barakat Major Awards | Up to £10,000 | Scholars, curators and heritage professionals, normally attached to a research institution |
| A4 | Iradj Bagherzade Publication Grant | Up to £6,000 | Major publications on Islamic art, architecture, archaeology or conservation |
| B1 | Barakat Senior Scholar | £10,000 | One established scholar from the Islamic world, for three months in Oxford |
| B2 | Barakat Postdoctoral Scholarship | £20,000 | One postdoctoral scholar from the Islamic world, for nine months in Oxford |
A1 is the one worth planning a year around, and it carries a sequence most applicants get wrong. The Trust makes no award without proof of admission, so your university application comes first and the grant application second. If you intend to start a taught master’s in Islamic art or heritage in late 2027, your admission work belongs in this winter, not next summer.
Then there is the rule that quietly ends applications. The Trust cannot pay a personal bank account. Individuals may apply, but you must name an institution to receive and administer the money, whether a university, a museum, a charity or a company. If you are a student, your own university is the obvious recipient, but somebody in its finance office has to agree, and in most Pakistani institutions that takes weeks of signatures. A reader who discovers this in late March has already lost the cycle. Settle it in January.
What Gerda Henkel actually pays
And why a one-month application is completely legitimate here.
| Item | Amount | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Postdoctoral researchers | €2,300 a month | The standard rate |
| Lecturer-qualified researchers | €3,100 a month | For a post-doctoral lecturer qualification or junior professors |
| Foreign-residence allowance | €575 or €775 a month | Added when the research takes you abroad, which is most Pakistani archive work |
| Family allowance | €400 for one child, €100 for each additional child | Paid alongside the monthly rate |
| Duration | One to twenty-four months | One month is a valid application |
Two rows change how you should use this scheme. The foreign-residence allowance sits on top of the monthly rate, which for a Pakistani researcher working in German or British archives turns a tight year into a workable one. And the duration starts at a single month, so a short archive trip, one season on a dig or a manuscript consultation fits the scheme as legitimately as a two-year project. Most researchers never apply because they assume they need a grand multi-year proposal.
The quiet gate is the ten-year window. A doctorate completed in 2014 falls outside it in 2027, and nothing else in the criteria rescues that. Check your own date before you write anything.
Questions readers ask about this field
The five that arrive most often.
I am doing my MA in history. What can I actually apply for?
Barakat, if your subject touches Islamic art, architecture, archaeology, heritage or conservation. Its A2 award takes postgraduate students, and A1 takes one student from the Islamic world onto a taught master’s with up to £25,000. Gerda Henkel is closed to you until you finish a doctorate, and AIPS needs a US affiliation, so those two are for later or never.
Is a research grant with no deadline real?
Yes, and it is unusual enough to be worth saying twice. Gerda Henkel’s scholarships carry no closing date, and grants of up to €25,000 can be applied for at any time, outside the committee cycle. There is no window to miss by four days, which happens constantly elsewhere in this field.
Why does AIPS appear on every Pakistani scholarship list?
Because of the name. The American Institute of Pakistan Studies funds research about Pakistan, not students from Pakistan, and it says plainly that applicants without a full-time US affiliation have no opportunities. Worse, its own fellowships page has shown a 1 January 2016 deadline for a decade while its FAQ describes a working process. Write and ask before you plan anything around it.
Can the Barakat Trust pay me directly?
No. Individuals may apply, but the money goes to an institution that agrees to receive and administer it. Name your university, museum or employer, and get their finance office to confirm in writing early. This single requirement ends more Barakat applications than any eligibility rule.
My doctorate is from 2013. Am I out?
For Gerda Henkel’s postdoctoral route, yes, since it asks for a PhD completed within the last ten years. Barakat’s A3 Major Awards carry no such window and take scholars, curators and heritage professionals, so that is the better door for an established researcher. Its B1 and B2 awards also reserve places for scholars from the Islamic world.

The ten weeks before 1 January are when Barakat applications are actually won. The Trust has not published its 2027 deadlines yet, and on the 2026 pattern most categories closed on 31 March with two closing earlier, so the window is shorter than it looks once the cycle opens. Use this winter for the three slow things: an admission decision if you are applying for A1, a finance office willing to receive the grant, and referees who have agreed to upload their own letters. Gerda Henkel needs none of that waiting, so if you hold a doctorate from the last ten years, that application can begin tonight. Confirm every figure and date on the funder’s own page before you apply.
