CSC Scholarship Tracks — Embassy vs University

This is the most important thing to understand about the CSC system.

Track 1 — Chinese Embassy Track (Type A)

You apply through the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your home country. The Embassy reviews your application, selects candidates, and forwards them to the China Scholarship Council.

This track is administered by the embassy and the quota is set by bilateral agreements between China and your country. Pakistan, for example, has a significant annual quota.

How to apply: Contact the Chinese Embassy in your country for application forms, requirements, and deadlines. Deadlines are typically between February and April each year.

Track 2 — University Track (Type B)

You apply directly to a specific Chinese university that has CSC scholarship quota. The university reviews your application, nominates you for the scholarship, and submits your nomination to the China Scholarship Council.

This track gives you more control — you target the university and program you want directly. It is also the track most international students overlook.

How to apply: Visit the international admissions page of your target Chinese university. Apply for the CSC scholarship directly through the university portal. Deadlines vary by university — typically between March and May.

Which track is better? Apply through both simultaneously if possible. The University Track gives you more control over your destination university. The Embassy Track gives you an additional bite at the apple through your country’s bilateral quota.

CSC Scholarship 2026 Deadlines

Eligibility Requirements

Nationality: You must be a citizen of a country other than China.

Age: Bachelor’s applicants must be under 25. Master’s applicants must be under 35. PhD applicants must be under 40.

Academic background: You must hold the degree level below the one you are applying for — a Bachelor’s to apply for Master’s, a Master’s to apply for PhD.

Health: You must pass a medical examination. The physical examination form is standardized and available from the Chinese Embassy.

Language: Programs taught in Chinese require HSK 4 (for most programs) or HSK 5/6 (for competitive programs). Programs taught in English require IELTS 6.0–6.5 or equivalent. Some universities accept a Medium of Instruction Certificate for English-medium programs.

Academic performance: There is no officially stated minimum GPA, but competitive universities expect a GPA equivalent to 3.0/4.0 or above for Master’s and 3.3/4.0 or above for PhD.

How to Apply for CSC Scholarship 2026 — Step by Step

Step 1 — Create an account on the CSC online system

Go to csc.edu.cn and create an account on the online application system. You will need this account for both the Embassy Track and University Track applications.

Step 2 — Choose your universities and programs

Research your target universities. For the University Track, visit each university’s international admissions page and confirm they offer CSC scholarships for your program.

Step 3 — Prepare your documents

Required documents for most CSC applications:

Step 6 — Track your application

After submission, monitor your application status through the CSC online system. Embassies and universities typically announce results between June and August.

Tips to Get Selected

Write a specific study plan. The study plan is the most important document in a CSC application after your transcripts. It must state your research question, your methodology, and why this specific Chinese university is the right place to pursue it. A vague study plan is the most common reason otherwise qualified applicants are rejected.

Contact a supervisor early. For PhD applications at competitive universities, a professor who has agreed to supervise your research is often the deciding factor. Reach out to 3 to 5 potential supervisors with a specific, tailored email — not a generic request.

Apply to both tracks. Many students apply only through the Embassy Track. Applying directly to universities through the University Track as well significantly increases your chances.

Choose realistic universities. Tsinghua and Peking University receive tens of thousands of applications. Unless your academic record is genuinely outstanding, include strong mid-tier universities in your application list.

Get your documents notarized early. Notarization of degree certificates and transcripts takes time — sometimes two to four weeks. Do not leave this until the week before the deadline.
