Berea College Scholarship
Berea Is the Only College in America That Funds 100% of Its International Students — And It Just Got Better
Among 2,700+ four-year colleges in the United States, exactly one makes this claim:
Berea College is the only school in the United States that provides 100% funding to 100% of enrolled international students. This combination of financial aid and scholarships offsets the costs of tuition, housing, food, and fees.
Not “meets full demonstrated need.” Not “generous aid available.” 100% funding to 100% of enrolled international students. Every single one.
And as of a recent announcement, Berea is going further:
Beginning in Fall 2027 and rooted in access, affordability, and opportunity, Berea College will launch Financial Freedom, a bold and unmatched financial aid framework that will guarantee 100% of tuition, housing, food, fees and supplies are covered without loans for all students until they graduate. Berea is the only school among the 2,700+ four-year colleges and universities across the country who can make this pledge.
The Financial Freedom Pledge adds supplies to the package and guarantees coverage until graduation not just the first year. For students entering Fall 2027, this is a materially different and better offer than what previous cohorts received.
No student pays tuition at Berea College. All admitted students receive the No-Tuition Promise, which covers 100% of tuition costs.
The honest constraint: Berea admits roughly 30 new international students per year, from applicants worldwide.

What Is Berea College — 170 Years of Radical Access
Founded in 1855, Berea College has a mission to provide high-quality education to students of all backgrounds, particularly those with limited financial means. The college stands out by offering a “No-Tuition Promise,” making it possible for students to graduate debt-free and focus on academic excellence and personal growth.
Berea College sits in Berea, Kentucky, in the Appalachian region of the United States, one of America’s most economically challenged areas.
Its founding was radical. Berea was established in 1855 as the first interracial and coeducational college in the American South admitting Black and white students together, and men and women together, six years before the American Civil War began. In a slave state. This was an act of extraordinary moral courage that defined the institution permanently.
Berea has never charged tuition to any student. Its endowment exists specifically to fund students who could not otherwise attend college.
Recognized among America’s top schools, Berea College combines academic rigor with a diverse and supportive learning community. Berea College offers majors in more than 33 fields of study that can lead to Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and/or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. An Independent Major option is available to students who want to pursue a customized field of study that isn’t already an established major program.
Berea’s outcomes for disadvantaged students are exceptional:
Nationally, just 21 percent of first generation students facing financial hardship graduate college within six years. At Berea, our graduation rate for these groups is three times as high.
Three times the national graduation rate for first-generation, low-income students. That is not marketing, that is institutional competence at doing the hardest thing in American higher education.

⚠️ What You Still Need to Pay — Be Realistic
Despite “100% funding,” there are real costs international students must cover.
1. The $2,200 Enrollment Deposit
Accepted international students are expected to pay a $2,200 (US) deposit to confirm their enrollment. This deposit can be used by international students for certain expenses during their four years of enrollment.
Important: This is not a fee that disappears. It is a deposit you draw from for personal expenses across four years. But you must produce $2,200 upfront.
For students who are unable to pay all or a portion of the deposit, additional financial aid is available.
The I-20 is not issued until the required payment has been received.
The I-20 is the document you need to apply for a US student visa. No deposit = no I-20 = no visa. If the deposit is unaffordable for your family, contact Berea’s admissions office immediately to request deposit assistance, do not simply decline the offer.
2. Personal Expenses and Annual Savings
International students are encouraged to save $1,000 (US) per year to contribute toward their personal expenses. The College makes summer jobs available to international students so that they may continue to work.
You are expected to save $1,000 per year from your campus job wages toward personal expenses.
All international students are provided with a paid, on-campus job through the College’s Work Program throughout the academic year. Students may use their wages (about US $2,000 the first year) to cover personal expenses.
You earn roughly $2,000 in your first year from the work program, so the $1,000 savings target is achievable from your own earnings.
3. International Airfare
Flights to the US are not covered. Budget $800-1,800 depending on your region.
4. Application Fee
Accepted international students are expected to pay a $50 admission fee.

The Work Program — Mandatory, Not Optional
Yes. All international students must participate in the work-study program, working at least 10 hours per week on campus.
Every Berea student domestic and international works on campus. This is not a financial aid condition bolted on; it is central to Berea’s educational philosophy. The college has operated a labor program since its founding, based on the conviction that work has dignity and that learning happens through doing.
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Requirement | Mandatory for all students |
| Hours | At least 10 hours per week |
| Location | On campus |
| First-year earnings | ~$2,000 |
| Summer jobs | Available to international students |
Work assignments span campus operations, academic departments, Berea’s craft industries (Berea is famous for Appalachian crafts), farms, food service, and administrative offices.
Plan for this. Ten hours weekly on top of a full academic load is a real commitment. Students who thrive at Berea treat the work program as part of the experience rather than an imposition.
⚠️ The Hard Reality: ~30 International Students Per Year
Each year, the college admits about 30 new international students.
Thirty. From the entire world.
Berea’s total enrollment is roughly 1,600 students, and its mission prioritizes students from Appalachia and low-income American families. International admission is a small, deliberately limited portion of each class.
What this means practically:
- Admission is extraordinarily competitive
- Strong academics alone will not be sufficient
- Demonstrated financial need is genuinely required, Berea exists for students who cannot otherwise attend
- Your application must be outstanding across academics, character, and fit with Berea’s mission
Build a balanced application list. Berea should be one of several applications, not your only plan.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet university entrance requirements in their own country and present outstanding secondary or leaving exam results. Applicants must also present scores from one of the following approved standardized tests: TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT or Duolingo.
Minimum Test Scores:
The minimum score required for each test is: TOEFL: 520 (paper-based); 190 (computer-based); 68 (internet-based).
They must have got scores of 520 on TOEFL’s paper-based exam, 68 on TOEFL’s internet-based exam, an overall 6 on IELTS, or a composite 19 on ACT, or a combined score of 980 on the SAT, or 95 on Duolingo exam.
| Test | Minimum Score |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 68 |
| TOEFL paper-based | 520 |
| TOEFL computer-based | 190 |
| IELTS | 6.0 overall |
| ACT | 19 composite |
| SAT | 980 combined |
| Duolingo | 95 |
These minimums are notably accessible compared to elite US colleges. IELTS 6.0 and SAT 980 are attainable scores. The competitiveness lies in the overall applicant pool and the 30-place limit not in impossible test thresholds.
⚠️ Berea will almost never consider scores from a test taken more than two years ago.
Your test must be recent. Retake if your scores are aging.

Why Berea May Be the Best US Option for Low-Income International Students
For a student from Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Kenya, or a similar context whose family genuinely cannot contribute toward US costs, Berea occupies a unique position:
Most US colleges: Need-aware for internationals. Asking for aid reduces admission chances. Merit scholarships leave $40,000-60,000 gaps.
Elite need-blind colleges (Amherst, Harvard, etc.): Meet full need, but admit rates for internationals are 3-5%, and calculated family contributions can still be significant.
Berea: Funds 100% of every enrolled international student. Explicitly seeks students with limited financial means. Test score minimums are accessible. Graduation outcomes for disadvantaged students are three times the national rate.
The trade-off is the 30-place limit but the students Berea admits are the ones who need it most, which is exactly the population this guide’s readers often belong to.
