What is on offer

World Physiotherapy holds its congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, at Expo Guadalajara, as a three-day event in 2027. It funds a limited number of bursaries for physiotherapists who otherwise could not attend.

Selected applicants receive either a full or a partial bursary. World Physiotherapy does not publish a figure for either, and neither does this post, because no page states one.

World Physiotherapy expects the application to open in October 2026. Check the congress bursary page today, because World Physiotherapy publishes no closing date in advance and a limited programme can close quickly.

Who qualifies

The delegate bursary sets six conditions, and each one rules somebody out.

1. A qualified physiotherapist, either employed or enrolled in a relevant postgraduate programme. Entry-level physiotherapy students do not qualify.

2. A member in good standing of a World Physiotherapy member organization.

3. A national and resident of a low or lower-middle income country or territory, by World Bank classification, that has a World Physiotherapy member organization.

4. Willing to return home after the congress, and after any postgraduate study abroad.

5. Never previously awarded a World Physiotherapy Congress bursary.

6. Able to show you sought funding from other sources.

Read conditions two and three together, because they are one gate rather than two. Your country must be on the World Bank list and have a member organisation and you must personally belong to it in good standing.

Where Pakistan stands

Both conditions hold.

Pakistan sits in the World Bank’s lower-middle income group, and World Physiotherapy’s own membership page records the Pakistan Physical Therapy Association as a member organization since 2011, within its Asia Western Pacific region, with 1,850 physiotherapist members reported in 2024.

So the question is not whether your country qualifies. It is whether your own membership is current and in good standing, which is a matter of a subscription and a phone call. PPTA lists its website at ppta.org.pk.

Do that first. Nobody can fix a lapsed membership in the week an application closes.

What they actually score you on

World Physiotherapy’s evaluation looks for five things, and the application is where most people lose marks by writing about themselves rather than about their community.

They want to see how you will use the benefits for your own continuing professional development; how you will share them with your workplace; how you will apply the knowledge to your local community; how you will support the profession locally or nationally; and what efforts you made to find other funding.

Four of those five are about other people. A strong application names the hospital department, the students, the district, the association committee. A weak one explains how much the applicant wants to go.

The speaker bursary, and why it is not for you this time

World Physiotherapy runs a second, separate award: the focused symposium speaker bursary, worth up to £1,500.

It is worth understanding even though its WP2027 window has closed, because the pattern repeats each congress.

That bursary covers the congress registration fee, international economy flights from the country named in your application, travel, accident and health insurance, local transfers in Guadalajara, hotel accommodation for up to four nights, daily subsistence up to £30 a day, and other presentation costs. Visas remain your responsibility.

Its conditions are tighter than the delegate bursary. You must be presenting in a focused symposium whose proposal has passed review first, and acceptance of the symposium does not guarantee funding. You submit a justification of up to 200 words across four headings, each scored out of three: your expertise and experience, the personal and professional benefits, the importance of your participation, and how you will use the experience afterwards. You upload a confirmation letter from the symposium moderator, or, if you are the moderator yourself, a statement explaining why you are best placed to lead it. General abstract presenters do not qualify, each symposium allows only one application, and previous bursary recipients cannot reapply.

For WP2027 the deadline was 8 April 2026, with outcomes in June 2026. If you want this route, the work starts a year before the congress, with a symposium proposal rather than a bursary form.

The part the funder will not help with

World Physiotherapy states that neither it nor the host association AMEFI takes responsibility for visa applications, and that it is not responsible for bursary holders during their stay in Guadalajara.

Say that plainly to yourself before you apply. A bursary that pays for flights you cannot board is worth nothing. Mexico’s entry requirements for Pakistani nationals are the real hurdle here, and our guide to Mexico sets out what Mexican consular processes actually involve.

Start the visa research the day you apply, not the day the award arrives. If you win a bursary in, say, early 2027 for a congress later that year, the visa timeline is already tight.

Two conditions that follow you home

A written report within one month of the event. World Physiotherapy requires it, and may publish content from it. Build that into your plan, because a report written properly is also the thing that justifies the next request to your employer.

Repayment if the congress is cancelled. The speaker bursary document states that the full amount, less essential expenses, must be repaid. Read whichever terms arrive with your own award.

And one practical rule from the speaker bursary that catches people out: make no bookings without World Physiotherapy’s agreement, and expect flights only from the country named in your application.

Step-by-step application process

Step 1, today: open the congress bursary page and check whether the application has opened. World Physiotherapy said October 2026.

Step 2, today: confirm your PPTA membership is current and in good standing. If it has lapsed, renew this week.

Step 3, this week: ask your employer for funding in writing, even expecting a refusal. The application asks what you did to find other money, and a written reply is your evidence. Try your hospital, your health department, any university affiliation and any professional travel fund.

Step 4, this week: draft the five answers, built around your workplace, your students, your district and your association rather than yourself.

Step 5: prepare your proof of qualification and employment, or your postgraduate enrolment.

Step 6: submit early rather than near the close. A limited programme with no published closing date rewards the people who move first.

Step 7, in parallel: begin the Mexico visa research, including the nearest Mexican consular route for Pakistani applicants and the documents it requires.

Step 8, if awarded: make no bookings until World Physiotherapy agrees them.

Step 9, after the congress: send the written report within one month.

If this one does not fit you

Conference bursaries are the most overlooked funding in healthcare, because people search for degrees instead. If a congress bursary is not your route this year, our medical and health sciences scholarships page carries degree and fellowship funding, and our free CV builder will prepare the CV that most of these applications ask for.
