Rhodes closes on your birthday, not on your marks
Rhodes House sets the Pakistan age bar at 18 to 23 on 1 October 2026, and stretches it to under 27 only when your first degree finished on or after 1 October 2025. A brilliant 26-year-old with an MPhil in history fails that test before anyone reads a word she wrote. The six routes in the first table apply no such limit.

Two famous names with a hard gate
Both fund the humanities generously. Both also carry a condition that decides your application before the panel meets, so read this table before you plan a year around either one.
| Guide | The gate | Country | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rhodes Scholarship | Age 18 to 23 on 1 October 2026, or under 27 if your first degree finished on or after 1 October 2025. You also need 4 of the last 10 years of study inside Pakistan, and a Pakistani passport. | United Kingdom | Rhodes House sets the Pakistan date. Your Oxford course application runs separately. |
| Gates Cambridge Scholarship | You apply to a Cambridge course first and tick the Gates box inside that application. The course deadline arrives before the funding decision, so an admission application has to exist already. | United Kingdom | Tied to your Cambridge course deadline, which differs by department. |

Writing your personal statement
Your statement is a writing sample here in a way it is not in other fields. Panels read it as prose.

Find your supervisor before you find your scholarship. Humanities funding follows people more closely than any other field. Search the department for the scholar who actually works on your period, your region or your language, read two things she published, and write to her about one disagreement you had with the second one. A supervisor who wants you changes how the department reads your file, and no amount of polish on the form does that. Confirm every date on the funder’s own page before you apply.
