Add each semester you have completed with its GPA and the total credit hours taken. This weights every semester by its credit load, which is how universities actually compute a CGPA โ€” not by averaging the GPAs.

Read this before you use any converted number. There is no universal formula between CGPA scales or between CGPA and percentage. Every university sets its own mapping, and credential evaluators such as WES apply their own. Anything below is an approximation for planning. On an application form, write the grade exactly as your transcript states it and let the university convert.

The percentage column follows the convention used across much of South Asia, where 60% is often treated as first division. Several European systems map differently, and a 70% in the UK is an excellent mark rather than a mediocre one.

Most scholarships state a minimum CGPA. This works out the GPA you need in your remaining credits to reach a target, and tells you honestly when the target is no longer reachable.

How a CGPA Is Actually Calculated

A grade point average is a weighted average, and the weight is credit hours. That single fact explains most of the confusion students have about their own results.

For one semester, multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add those products together, then divide by the total credit hours. A student who scores 4.0 in a 1-credit course and 2.0 in a 4-credit course does not have a 3.0 average; they have a 2.4, because the larger course carries four times the weight.

For a cumulative CGPA, the same principle applies across semesters. Add every grade point multiplied by its credits across your whole degree, then divide by total credits attempted. Averaging your semester GPAs gives a different and usually wrong answer, because semesters rarely carry identical credit loads. The calculator above does it the correct way.

Retakes are the common trap. Universities differ on whether a repeated course replaces the original grade or both remain in the calculation. Check your own regulations before you rely on a predicted CGPA, because this single rule can move a final result by several tenths.

Why Converting CGPA to Percentage Is Unreliable

Students constantly ask what their 3.5 is "in percentage". The honest answer is that it depends entirely on who is asking.

No international standard exists. A widely circulated shortcut multiplies CGPA by 25 to reach a percentage on a 4.0 scale, which makes 3.5 into 87.5%. Another common formula subtracts 0.75 and multiplies by 10 on a 10.0 scale. Both are conventions used by particular institutions, not mathematical truths, and applying the wrong one can shift your number by ten points or more.

The deeper problem is that grading cultures differ. In much of South Asia, 80% is an excellent mark and 60% is a first division. In the United Kingdom, 70% is a first-class result and marks above 85% are rare in the humanities. A mechanical conversion between these systems misrepresents performance in both directions.

What universities actually do is send transcripts to a credential evaluator, or apply their own published conversion for your country. WES, ECE and similar bodies use country-specific and sometimes institution-specific tables that are not public in full.

What to write on the form. Enter the grade exactly as your transcript states it, with the scale โ€” "3.64 out of 4.00" or "First Division, 72%". Converting it yourself and entering a number that does not appear on your transcript creates a discrepancy, and discrepancies get applications flagged.

What CGPA Do Scholarships Require?

Most scholarships state a minimum and select well above it. These are the stated minimums typically seen, not the competitive levels.

If Your CGPA Is Below the Requirement

A low CGPA narrows options; it rarely closes them entirely. Several routes exist and they are worth knowing before you decide not to apply.

Show an upward trend

Admissions committees read transcripts, not just averages. A student who scored 2.6 in first year and 3.6 in final year is read differently from one who did the reverse.

Mention the trend explicitly in your SOP, in one sentence, without excuses.

Lead with research or publications

A conference paper or a published article carries real weight at research-focused departments, and sometimes more than the difference between a 3.2 and a 3.5.

Put it in the first third of your CV, not the last.

Strengthen the test score

Where grades are borderline, a strong IELTS, TOEFL or GRE gives the committee a second data point in your favour.

Practise free with our IELTS and TOEFL tool.

Explain a genuine disruption briefly

Illness, bereavement or financial necessity that demonstrably affected one period is worth a factual sentence. A pattern of low marks with no specific cause is not.

Two sentences maximum, then move on to evidence of capability.

Target departments rather than rankings

A department whose research matches your work will read your application more generously than a higher-ranked one where you are a poor fit.

Name the research group in your application and say why.

CGPA Questions Students Ask Us

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA usually refers to one semester or term. CGPA is the cumulative figure across everything you have completed. Some systems use the terms differently, so read what your transcript calls each one.

Can I convert my CGPA to percentage exactly?

No. There is no universal formula, and different universities and evaluators use different tables. Use a conversion for planning, and write the transcript figure on application forms.

Do failed or repeated courses count?

That depends on your university's regulations. Some replace the original grade, some average both, and some keep the failure in the calculation permanently. Check your own handbook.

Is a 3.0 CGPA enough for a scholarship?

For some, yes. Several major scholarships state 3.0 as a minimum, though successful applicants usually sit well above it. Research output, work experience and a strong application can compensate for a modest margin.

Does this calculator store my grades?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Close the page and it is gone.

My university uses a different scale. Will this still work?

Yes, if you pick the matching scale. For unusual scales, calculate with the closest option and treat the output as indicative.

Should I include my CGPA on my CV?

Include it when it helps you, with the scale stated. If it is modest, put your class rank, thesis or publications forward instead. Our CV builder handles both.
