Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship
⚠️ This Is a PhD Scholarship — Not a Master’s or Undergraduate Award
The name “Chancellor’s International Scholarship” suggests a general international award. It is not. Before you read further:
Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship is for the applicants applying for a Ph.D.
Warwick allocates Chancellor’s International Scholarships annually through a combined postgraduate research competition, open to all international and EU students across any discipline. Eligible courses include: PhD, MPhil/PhD, EngD, Entering the PhD stage of an MRes+PhD.
| Eligible | Not Eligible |
|---|---|
| ✅ PhD | ❌ Taught Master’s (MA, MSc) |
| ✅ MPhil/PhD | ❌ Undergraduate |
| ✅ EngD | ❌ Standalone MRes |
| ✅ MRes+PhD (entering PhD stage) | ❌ PGDip / PGCert |
If you want Master’s funding at Warwick, look at the WMG Excellence Scholarships (£5,000–£15,000) instead covered at the end of this guide.
What Makes It Worth Reading
For the 2025/2026 entry, up to 42 scholarships will be awarded, with a total allocation of £5 million.
Up to 42 fully funded PhD places, roughly £5 million allocated, and no nationality restriction whatsoever.
Be assessed as ‘overseas’ for fees purposes. There are no other nationality criteria; Be from any discipline at Warwick.
Any country. Any subject. That is unusually open for an award of this size.

The Funding Package
The scholarship fully covers tuition fees and pays an annual stipend at UKRI rates — provisionally £15,285 for 2026–2027, to be confirmed in February 2026. 3.5 years of funding (shorter if you apply after the first year of study) more research, teaching, and support (RTSG) funding of £5,000.
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| Overseas tuition fees | ✅ Fully covered |
| Maintenance stipend | ✅ At UKRI rates |
| RTSG (research, teaching & support grant) | ✅ £5,000 |
| Duration | 3.5 years (shorter if you apply after year one) |
⭐ The £5,000 RTSG Is a Genuine Differentiator
Most scholarships cover fees and living costs and stop there. Warwick adds a £5,000 Research, Teaching and Support Grant money for conference travel, fieldwork, equipment, software, training courses and research materials.
For a PhD researcher from Pakistan, Nigeria or Kenya, this is the difference between presenting your work at international conferences and never leaving Coventry. It is one of the most practically valuable components of any PhD award in this series.
⚠️ On the Stipend Figure — Verify It
Reported figures vary between sources: provisionally £15,285 for 2026–2027 and approximately £15,609 per year.
The structural point is what matters: the stipend is pegged to the UKRI rate, which rises annually and is confirmed in February each year.
Check Warwick’s official scholarship page for the confirmed current-year figure rather than relying on any third-party number.
Total Value
Up to £24,010 in total scholarship value, including living expenses and tuition.
Across 3.5 years, with fees, stipend and RTSG combined, the package runs well into six figures for most overseas PhD programmes.

⚠️ The Four-Deadline Chain — Where Applicants Lose This Award
This is the most important operational section of this guide. Warwick’s process runs as a sequence of separate deadlines, and missing any one ends your application.
Submit your course application before the deadline. Receive your 7-digit applicant ID via email (within 48 hours). Register your ITS applicant account using the ID. Submit your scholarship application before the deadline (late applications not accepted). Upload all supporting documents by the final deadline (late documents not accepted).
The Sequence
| # | Stage | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Submit your PhD course application | Must come first |
| 2 | Receive your 7-digit applicant ID by email | ⚠️ Allow at least 48 hours for this email to arrive |
| 3 | Register your ITS applicant account | Using that ID |
| 4 | Submit your scholarship application | Separate deadline, separate system |
| 5 | Upload all supporting documents | ⚠️ A third, later deadline |
How Tight It Actually Was
Using the 2025/26 cycle as the template:
Submit your PhD course application by 9 December 2024, submit your scholarship application by 12 December 2024, and submit all required supporting documents by 7 January 2025.
| Stage | 2025/26 Cycle Date | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| Course application | 9 December | — |
| Scholarship application | 12 December | 3 days later |
| Supporting documents | 7 January | ~4 weeks later |
Three days between your course application and your scholarship application — while waiting up to 48 hours for an applicant ID.
If you submit your course application on the deadline day, you may not receive your ID in time to register and complete the scholarship form. Submit your course application at least a week early.
Warwick Will Not Make Exceptions
Submit your scholarship application by the application deadline. We regret being unable to accept late applications for any reason. Submit supporting documents by the supporting document deadline. We regret being unable to accept late supporting documents for any reason.
“For any reason” appears twice. Visa delays, referee delays, portal problems none of it changes the outcome.
Please note that the Doctoral College cannot help with issuing of ID numbers.
Even Warwick’s own Doctoral College cannot expedite your applicant ID. Build in the buffer yourself.

Results Timing Matters for Your Visa
All the applicants will be informed of the result, on their scholarship application, by email by start of March. However, international applicants are advised to start their UK Tier 4 visa process by then.
Results arrive in early March for an October start. That is workable but begin gathering visa documentation as soon as you have your result.

⭐ Current Warwick PhD Students Can Apply — But Only in Year One
Students already enrolled in a PhD or MPhil/PhD programme can only apply in their first year of enrolment.
If you are already at Warwick, self-funding or partially funded in your first year, you can still compete. Applying after your first year reduces the 3.5-year funding period accordingly.
Second-year students onward are not eligible. This is a one-time window.
⚠️ Cannot Be Deferred
Scholarships cannot be deferred to the next academic year.
Applicants planning to commence their program should only apply for the scholarship in that year.
Defer your PhD start and you lose the award. Apply only for the year you genuinely intend to begin.
How Applications Are Assessed
Warwick assesses applicants on academic merit, research potential, and alignment with its research priorities.
Each faculty makes the final decision on Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship recipients. Within every faculty, there are a number of independent Faculty Assessors.
| Criterion | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Academic merit | Your degree classifications, prizes, publications |
| Research potential | Quality and originality of your research proposal |
| Alignment with Warwick’s research priorities | Does your work fit what Warwick actually does? |
Decisions are made faculty by faculty by independent Faculty Assessors, so you compete primarily against applicants in your own faculty, not the whole university.
Read the Applicant Guidance Notes and PGR Ranking Criteria.
⭐ Warwick publishes its PGR Ranking Criteria. Read that document before writing anything. Very few universities publish the actual scoring framework using it is a straightforward advantage.
Required Documents
These include academic transcripts, research proposals, and references.
Upload all necessary supporting documents, such as academic transcripts, references, and a research proposal.
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| ✅ Academic transcripts | All degrees |
| ✅ Research proposal | The single most important document |
| ✅ References | Academic referees, brief them early |
| ✅ English language evidence | Per Warwick’s requirements |
| ✅ CV | Academic record and research experience |
Contact a Potential Supervisor Early
Warwick’s postgraduate research culture, like most UK PhD systems, runs on supervisor relationships. Identify academics whose work aligns with yours, email them with your CV and a short research summary, and establish interest before the competition opens in October.
A supervisor who wants to work with you strengthens both your admission application and your scholarship ranking.
