Reach Oxford Scholarship

One of the Very Few Fully Funded Undergraduate Scholarships in the UK

Almost all UK scholarship money for international students goes to postgraduates. Chevening is Master’s only. Commonwealth is postgraduate. Clarendon and Felix are graduate awards. If you are finishing secondary school in Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh or Kenya and need a funded bachelor’s degree abroad, the options are brutally thin.

Reach Oxford is one of the exceptions.

The Reach Oxford Scholarship is a University of Oxford award for undergraduate students from low-income countries who, for political or financial reasons or a lack of suitable local facilities, cannot study for a degree in their own country. The Reach Oxford Scholarship is one of the rare fully-funded undergraduate scholarships at a top UK university, as most UK international funding targets postgraduate study.

It supports students from low-income countries who cannot pursue a degree in their home country due to political or financial barriers, or a lack of suitable educational facilities.

Note that eligibility clause carefully. It is not simply “financially disadvantaged.” It covers three distinct situations: political reasons, financial reasons, or the absence of suitable educational facilities in your country.

And the rule that governs everything else:

Students must apply for and receive an offer of admission before Oxford can consider them for a Reach Oxford Scholarship.

You must win your Oxford place first. The scholarship is a second stage, not a parallel one.

What the Scholarship Covers

Tuition fees and college fees, a grant for living expenses and one return air fare per year. The scholarship duration is 3 or 4 years depending on course length.

⭐ A Flight Home Every Year

Most scholarships that include travel fund one flight out at the start and one home at the end. Reach Oxford funds a return flight every single year.

For an 18-year-old from Lagos, Dhaka or Karachi spending three to four years abroad, that means you can actually go home during vacations without your family finding the money. Over a four-year course that is four return flights, a benefit worth several thousand pounds and, more importantly, one that makes the degree emotionally survivable.

❌ Medicine Is Excluded

Must be enrolled in any UG program at the University of Oxford except for Medicine.

⚠️ How Competitive Is It, Honestly

Extremely competitive only 2-3 awards per year across the whole University.

Only a small number are awarded each year, making it highly competitive. Oxford has no additional funding for applicants who are not selected.

Read that last line again. Oxford has no backup funding. If you are admitted but not awarded Reach Oxford, Oxford will not find the money elsewhere. You would need to fund the place yourself or decline it.

With only a handful of awards a year, the scholarship is best treated as one possibility, not a plan. Focus first on a strong admission application.

This is the honest framing. Apply the award is genuinely transformative and costs nothing to pursue. But build a real plan alongside it: Berea College, need-blind US colleges, home-country options, and other undergraduate routes.

The Two-Stage Process

This is where applicants go wrong. Reach Oxford requires two separate applications with two separate deadlines, months apart.

Stage 1 — Oxford Admission via UCAS

To be considered, you must apply through UCAS by 15 October 2026 and secure an offer of admission.

Oxford’s undergraduate deadline is mid-October far earlier than other UK universities, which generally run to late January. Oxford applicants also face admissions tests and interviews in the autumn.

Special Situations

Deferred Entry Offers

If you hold an offer for deferred entry for an undergraduate course at Oxford, and you’d like to apply for a scholarship, please apply for the scholarship in January of the year you will start your Oxford course.

Astrophoria Foundation Year

Astrophoria Foundation Year applicants should apply for the scholarship in January of the year they begin their undergraduate course. The University will notify Foundation Year students about available scholarships when progressing to their undergraduate course.

⚠️ One Application Only — Ever

Each student can apply only once, and Oxford considers only one undergraduate scholarship application per student.

You get a single attempt. There is no reapplying next cycle. Make the one application count.

Not All Colleges Participate

Not all colleges participate every year — if yours doesn’t, you may be transferred to a participating college if you win.

Do not let college choice deter you, Oxford handles the transfer if needed.

Renewal Conditions

Scholars must write an annual report on their academic and social activities and achievements at the University. Receipt of the award in subsequent years is subject to satisfactory academic progress.

⚠️ Scam Warning

Oxford awards the Reach Oxford Scholarship directly — applying is free and no one can guarantee it for a fee. Ignore any agent claiming to ‘secure’ an Oxford scholarship, and never hand over money or personal financial details for a promised award.

The University is not responsible for the content of external sites advertising the scheme and would encourage applicants to read the following details to check their eligibility.

Oxford itself warns about third-party sites misrepresenting this scheme. Read ox.ac.uk directly. Pay nobody. No agent can secure this award.

How to Strengthen Your Application

Your admission application is 90% of the battle

You cannot win Reach Oxford without an Oxford offer, and Oxford offers go to a small fraction of applicants. Every hour spent on admissions personal statement, admissions test preparation, interview practice matters more than scholarship strategy.

Address the “cannot study at home” clause directly

The eligibility wording is specific. In your supporting statement, clearly explain why studying for this degree in your home country is not possible — whether due to cost, political circumstances, or the genuine absence of the course or facilities.

Document financial need properly

The form has a dedicated financial information section. Be complete, accurate and consistent with what you stated in your admissions application.

Choose referees who can speak to both need and ability

Your references should corroborate your academic standing and understand your circumstances.

Have a genuine backup plan

With 2–3 awards a year and no reserve funding from Oxford, you need parallel options.
