Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) 2027 — Complete Guide | High School | Full Tuition Aid Available

Yale Young Global Scholars

YYGS Is a Genuine Academic Experience — But It Is Not a Yale Admissions Advantage

Most guides about Yale Young Global Scholars sell it as a prestige credential. An honest guide must start differently, because thousands of families spend significant money and effort on YYGS based on a misunderstanding of what it is.

Yale Young Global Scholars is a two-week residential enrichment program at Yale for current sophomores and juniors, running three sessions in June and July 2027 across three academic tracks. Tuition is $7,500, need-based aid covers up to 100% of it for both domestic and international students, and roughly 14% of applicants get a spot. It is a moderately selective, well-run program with substance. What it is not is a research program, a Yale admissions advantage, or a credential that does much on its own.

Is YYGS a research program? No. There is no lab work, no independent project, and no paper. You complete a collaborative group capstone under YYGS staff guidance, and there are no grades or course credit.

The honest answer on YYGS is that it is worth it if you want the experience, and a poor investment if you want the line on your application.

This matters especially for international families in Pakistan, Nigeria, India, Bangladesh, Kenya, and elsewhere where $7,500 plus international airfare represents an enormous financial commitment. If your goal is Yale admission, YYGS will not deliver it. If your goal is a transformative two weeks of intellectual engagement with peers from 150+ countries, YYGS delivers that genuinely and well.

The good news: need-based aid can cover 100% of tuition for students from all countries and one scholarship covers travel too.

What YYGS Actually Is

Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) is an academic enrichment program for outstanding high school students from around the world. Each summer, students from over 150 countries (including all 50 U.S. states) participate in one interdisciplinary, two-week session at Yale’s historic campus. The curriculum is highly collaborative, exposing participants to innovative topics while facilitating student discussions shaped by international perspectives.

The Academic Tracks

Students have the opportunity to participate in a STEM, social sciences, humanities, or cross-disciplinary track. The program currently offers four academic tracks which focus on STEM, social science, interdisciplinary, and humanities subjects.

TrackFocus
STEMScience, technology, engineering, mathematics
Social SciencesPolitics, economics, sociology, international relations
HumanitiesLiterature, philosophy, history, arts
InterdisciplinaryCross-disciplinary approaches to complex problems

The Experience

  • Two weeks residential on Yale’s campus in New Haven, Connecticut
  • Lectures from Yale faculty and visiting experts
  • Small-group seminars (12:1 student-to-instructor ratio)
  • Collaborative group capstone project
  • Peer community from 150+ countries
  • No grades, no credit, no transcript

Cost and Financial Aid — The Critical Section

Tuition: $7,500

Tuition is $7,500.

Full tuition payment is due on December 16, 2026 for Early Action admits, and March 15, 2027 for Regular Decision admits.

Need-Based Financial Aid: Up to 100%

Need-based aid can cover up to 100% of tuition for both domestic and international students.

YYGS accepts applications from ALL countries, and offers the opportunity for students to apply for need-based financial aid to students from ALL countries.

This is genuinely significant. Unlike many US pre-college programs that offer minimal or no aid to international students, YYGS provides full need-based aid consideration to students from every country. A student from a low-income family in Lagos, Karachi, Dhaka, or Nairobi can attend at zero tuition cost.

⚠️ Travel

It does not cover travel.

This is the critical gap. Even with 100% tuition aid, you must fund:

  • International airfare to New Haven/New York (typically $800-1,800 from Africa/Asia)
  • US visa fees (approximately $185 for B1/B2 or appropriate visa)
  • Ground transport to campus
  • Personal spending money

For a student from Pakistan or Nigeria, this means roughly $1,200-2,500 in unfunded costs even with full tuition aid.

Exception: the Young Leaders Scholarship covers travel — see below.

YYGS Financial Aid: What's Covered and What Isn't

Two Special Scholarships — Including One That Covers Travel

In order to be considered for one of these scholarships, you MUST have completed the entire online YYGS Application, including the Need-Based Financial Aid portion, by January 6, 2027. As part of reviewing your financial aid request, YYGS staff will automatically review whether or not you meet any of our scholarships’ eligibility requirements, and contact you when decisions are released by mid-March.

You do not apply separately for these scholarships. Complete the financial aid section of your YYGS application by January 6, 2027, and YYGS staff automatically review you against scholarship criteria.

Scholarship 1: Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Alumni Scholarship

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Alumni Scholarships will be awarded to selected students who completed the YYAS program in any summer prior to 2026. The scholarship covers full tuition (but not travel costs) for students to attend any of the YYGS sessions offered in 2027.

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is a separate Yale program held in African countries for African high school students a free or low-cost program run in partnership with African institutions. Alumni of YYAS receive priority access to YYGS through this scholarship.

If you are an African student, investigating YYAS directly may be a more accessible entry point than YYGS and it creates a pathway to YYGS afterward.

Scholarship 2: Young Leaders (YL) Scholarship — Covers Travel

YL Scholarships will be awarded to selected students in the U.S. and internationally who self-identify as at least ONE of the following: Black or African American (including Africa and the Caribbean). The scholarship covers full tuition and travel costs for students to attend any of the YYGS sessions offered in 2027.

YYGS reviews all applications holistically. That means they’re not just checking your grades or test scores, but they also evaluate students from all kinds of backgrounds and who are presented with different opportunities. So your essays and short answer responses actually matter a lot.

Holistic review favors international applicants from under-resourced contexts. YYGS explicitly evaluates opportunity relative to context.

Application Fee and Waiver

YYGS receives exactly $85 USD for Early Action or $100 USD for Regular Decision fee payments. YYGS application fees are non-refundable.

Fee Waiver Available:

YYGS will waive the application fee if it constitutes a significant financial burden for the student’s family. The link to the Fee Waiver Request Form is available on the “Payment Options” page in the YYGS application, but it will only appear there AFTER students have fully completed the “Financial Aid” page in the YYGS application. Students who apply for a fee waiver must have a school official finalize the form.

Critical sequence: The fee waiver link only appears AFTER you complete the Financial Aid page. If you cannot afford the $85-100 fee, complete the financial aid section first then the waiver option becomes visible.

Payment Methods:

YYGS does not accept any other method of direct wire or payment; applicants must make payments to YYGS using our approved payment processors Slate (domestic) or FlyWire (international) via the Applicant Status portal. If you attempt to pay YYGS through alternative means, your payment will not be processed and your application will not be submitted nor reviewed.

International applicants must use FlyWire. No exceptions, no wire transfers, no alternative methods.

Early Action closes October 15, 2026, with decisions by December 11. Regular Decision closes January 6, 2027, with decisions by March 10. And Early Action applicants are either admitted or deferred to the Regular Decision pool, not rejected in December.

Early Action vs Regular Decision — Strategic Note

Early Action applicants are either admitted or deferred to the Regular Decision pool, not rejected in December.

And Early Action carries no rejection risk, you are either admitted or deferred for further review. It also has a lower application fee ($85 vs $100).

However: If you need financial aid consideration for the YYAS Alumni or Young Leaders Scholarships, the January 6, 2027 deadline applies. Applying Early Action while ensuring your financial aid section is complete gives you both advantages.

Who Should Apply — An Honest Assessment

YYGS is a strong fit if you:

  • Want genuine intellectual engagement with international peers
  • Value the experience itself rather than a credential
  • Qualify for substantial financial aid (making cost manageable)
  • Are eligible for the Young Leaders Scholarship (travel covered)
  • Want exposure to a US university environment before applying to universities

YYGS may not be the right investment if you:

  • Are primarily seeking a Yale admissions advantage (it does not provide one)
  • Need a research output or publication (YYGS has none)
  • Would need to borrow or strain family finances for travel costs
  • Are looking for academic credit or grades (YYGS gives neither)

For families in developing countries: If you receive 100% tuition aid, the remaining travel cost (~$1,200-2,500) still represents a serious expense. Consider whether that money might do more for your child’s future invested in SAT preparation, university application fees for multiple institutions, or other pathways.

If you qualify for the Young Leaders Scholarship (travel included), the calculation changes entirely apply.

Related Program: Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS)

For African students specifically, Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is a separate program held in African countries significantly more accessible than travelling to the United States. YYAS participants also gain eligibility for the YYAS Alumni Scholarship to attend YYGS later.

Investigate YYAS at Yale’s website if you are an African high school student. It may be a more practical starting point.
